This half-day topic trio with presenter David Magno will review the following areas: Focus Four, Top 25 Violations and Previous Years Fatalities. The Focus Four hazard categories are collectively responsible for more than half of all fatalities that occur on construction sites. They include fall hazards, electrocution hazards, struck-by-object hazards, and caught-in or -between hazards.  Come and get up-to-date information and ways to stay safe on the job site.

Many employers with more than 10 employees are required to keep a record of serious work-related injuries and illnesses. Minor injuries requiring first aid only do not need to be recorded.  Who, where and how to report has changed significantly in the past few years.  Join presenter John Bodnar at this workshop to learn OSHA definitions for injury and illness, and legal requirements for reporting and recording.  The information presented will help employers, workers and OSHA evaluate the safety of a workplace, understand industry hazards, and implement worker protections to reduce and eliminate hazards -preventing future workplace injuries and illnesses.

This workshop will focus on key leadership skills needed in today’s challenging landscape of funding and talent shortages, political polarization and confrontation, and the rapid advance of technology and accompanying cybersecurity concerns. Participants will understand better how to build a strong culture within their organization, how best to lead in these challenging times, and how to keep their organization safe from internal and external threats.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Open Meetings Act (OMA) apply to nearly 10,000 public bodies in the executive branches of state, county, and local governments.  These transparency statutes promote and enforce the rights of the public to access the records of public bodies and to attend meetings of boards and commissions, whose decisions on behalf of the public must be made at meetings open to the public.

This seminar is intended for those persons in county and local government, whose duties, directly or indirectly, include the processing of FOIA requests and the conducting of public meetings.  The presentation focuses on contributing to the participants’ understanding of these laws through an overview of each statute, a look at recent legislative changes and judicial decisions, and, most importantly, a dialogue between presenters and participants.

Carriers with drivers who require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) need driver supervisors who are trained on alcohol misuse and drug use. They must be familiar with signs of probable misuse. This is an important first step in keeping unsafe, impaired drivers off the road. Reasonable Suspicion Training is designed to help driver supervisors understand how to deal with a driver who may be impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. Join presenter Dan Litzner for this program which will help supervisors make good decisions when determining reasonable suspicion.  This curriculum is designed to fully satisfy the requirements of 49 CFR 382.603, including the one hour of training on alcohol misuse, plus one hour on controlled substance use. It includes additional, vital information on day-to-day activities for a driver supervisor responsible for recognizing impaired drivers and following through on documentation and next steps. The FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and requirements for registration with CDL drivers will also be introduced and discussed. Participants will also understand the types of distracted driving and rules and the repercussions for Michigan drivers.

A panel of speakers will discuss a variety of topics of interest to wastewater plant managers and superintendents. PowerPoint presentations, handouts, instruction and group discussions will enable participants to acquire new knowledge that they can apply in their workplaces, while also completing their EGLE requirement for managerial CEC’s.  (Managerial CEC’s = 0.6 Available)

The purpose of performance reviews is two-fold: an accurate and actionable evaluation of performance, and then development of that person’s skills in line with job tasks. For recipients, feedback has intrinsic and extrinsic value. Across fields, research shows that people become high performers by identifying specific areas where they need to improve and then practicing those skills with performance feedback.  Join Laura Katers Reilly, P.C., as she outlines best practices to do performance appraisals for your employees, in a half-day workshop that will get you on your way to having more resources and knowledge.

(Half- or Whole-Day option - please see below!)

Is it time to improve your Excel skills? How about a new perspective with on-going
scams? Are your cut, copy and paste skills a little dull? Don’t feel so alone.
Technology is always changing, and with change comes challenge. All you need to
do is look at things a little differently. Look from the outside in. Like hackers do.
Presenter Brian Maki guides you along to freshen your skills to increase your
confidence with technology. Beyond all the madness, with a laugh or two along the
way, you’ll learn a few things from this session: maneuvering Excel, common sense
principles, hacker logic.

*If registering for Excel you can bring a fully charged laptop to the session (limited outlets for use).

*This workshop has a half- or whole-day option - please note on your registration form if completing on-line which one you are registering for, and if half-day morning or afternoon session - thank you!

The first part of this workshop will provide an overview of MIOSHA Part 9, Excavations, Trenching, and Shoring. This program will include a description of the hazards in and around an excavation, a discussion on the duties and role of the qualified person, a discussion on soil classification and testing, and an overview of the protective systems used to support and protect employees in an excavation.  The second part will provide an overview of the construction rules related to confined space and permit-required confined spaces. Examples of actual spaces will be used to clarify the definition and facilitate proper identification of confined spaces versus permit-required confined spaces.  Means of entering a permit-required confined space are described and discussed.

Join us for this exciting day of collaboration with Jen Tucker from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Tara Laase-McKinney with the Marquette DDA and other local professionals to discuss strategies and resources in downtown development and revitalization.  Topics will include DDA & the Revitalization Act, community visions, PA-57 requirements, technical assistance and financial tools, current projects and more!  This full-day workshop will include discussion, networking and tools to help you revitalize your communities! (Lunch included in workshop fee)

The challenges facing public sector managers keep coming.  Citizens and communities want more and more services with higher standards of performance, and at the same time, they are less willing to pay more in taxes and fees.  Similarly, generational changes in work ethic and career dedication make the leadership job even more daunting.  These and numerous other factors make surviving and ultimately thriving as a manager an interesting challenge.  Join Lew Bender in this workshop as he identifies trends impacting leaders, examine the changing world of public sector managers, and offer solutions for building stronger teams capable of surviving and thriving in hard times.
